It's 2:30 AM and you're still scrolling through your phone, telling yourself "just five more minutes." Or maybe you're working on that project, convinced that if you push through another hour, you'll finally figure things out. I get it. I've been there countless times, fighting this exact battle for years.

Here's what I've learned the hard way: extra hour of "productivity" is actually stealing your future.

Matthew Walker's (a world-renowned sleep scientist and UC Berkeley professor who's spent decades studying how sleep affects our brains) groundbreaking research in "Why We Sleep" revealed some things that should terrify every ambitious person.

Did you know that if you go without sleep for around 14 days, you'll literally die? Your Alzheimer's risk increases without those critical 7-8 hours of sleep. And if you thought you can “catch up” with sleep on the weekends – you can't! Sleep debt doesn't work like your credit card.

But here's what's really keeping me up at night (pun intended): sleep anxiety is emerging as a critical wellness challenge in 2025, driven by increasing digital dependency, economic uncertainty, and lingering pandemic effects. We're not just sleep-deprived anymore – we're anxious about sleep itself.

And for those of us chasing excellence? Business executives experience a 5 to 10 percent decrease in executive function for every 45 minutes of sleep debt accrued. Every. Single. 45 minutes. That "hustle harder" mentality is literally making you stupider.

I'll be honest with you; I've started sleep routines, broken them, restarted them, failed again. It's embarrassing how many times I've told myself "tomorrow I'll prioritize sleep" while staying up until 5 AM "being productive." But I’ve started treating sleep like the non-negotiable business meeting it is.

You wouldn't skip a client call or investor pitch, right? So why are you skipping the one appointment that determines whether you show up as your brilliant self or as a zombie version of your potential?

Here’s how I’m working on getting better sleep, and I think you should try it too:

    • Set a "sleep appointment" with yourself. Put it in your calendar. 10 PM to 6 AM – blocked out, sacred, untouchable. When that alarm goes off, you're "in a meeting" with your future self.
    • Second, one hour before sleep, no screens, no work calls, no "quick email checks." Your brain needs time to slowly cool off before bed.
    • Third, remember that yoga, walking, and jogging may be some of the best natural remedies for improving sleep and tackling insomnia. That afternoon walk isn't just exercise; it's an investment in tonight's recovery.

Look, I know you're hungry for success. I know every fiber in your body screams that more hours equals more progress. But what if I told you that the most successful people aren't the ones working the most hours – they're the ones showing up fully awake, creative, and cognitively sharp because they respected their sleep?

Your dreams don't just happen when you're asleep; they become reality because you slept.

I'm still fighting this battle with you, restarting my sleep routine probably for the thousandth time. But I'll keep trying harder until I master it, because I know you and I both deserve to show up as our sharpest, most creative selves.
