Every single one of us knows that feeling. You're about to do something big: start that online business, learn to code, apply for that leadership role; and suddenly, that knot forms in your stomach. Your hands get a little sweaty. Your brain floods you with a million reasons to stop. You're told this is fear, and for too long, we've seen it as a sign to turn back. But what if that feeling of discomfort isn't a red flag? What if it's a green one?
I'm telling you, it's time to change the way you see things. That feeling of being out of your depth? That's not a warning. It's the signal that you are exactly where you need to be to level up. This isn't some generic motivational fluff. It's a fundamental mindset shift backed by hard science, and it’s the key to unlocking the future you say you want.
For the past couple of weeks, I've been diving into some of the latest research on neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and adapt. It's a big, fancy word for a simple, powerful concept: your brain is a muscle. And just like any muscle, it only grows when it’s under stress. That feeling of discomfort you get when trying something new? That's your brain building new neural pathways. It's the equivalent of lifting a heavier weight at the gym.
A recent study from researchers in the UK confirmed this, showing that people who consistently step outside their comfort zones to learn new, challenging skills not only perform better but also have more resilient, adaptable brains. For our generation, that’s not just a nice-to-have; it's a non-negotiable. The world is changing fast, and if you’re not actively pushing your boundaries, you're not just standing still; you're falling behind.
Listen, our generation in Africa is already a masterclass in resilience. We navigate power cuts, unstable markets, and infrastructure challenges on a daily basis. We are born innovators. But too often, we see these challenges as obstacles to endure rather than opportunities to exploit. This is where the mindset shift comes in. The discomfort you feel when the lights go out or the internet fails is a familiar feeling. The goal now is to apply that same resilience to your personal and professional growth.
Think about someone like Kelvin, a young guy I met who wanted to start a solar installation business in Nigeria. He knew the theory, but he was afraid to do his first installation alone. He wanted to "get more experience" first, which was just code for staying in his comfort zone. I told him to find one small, low-risk project and just do it. He was nervous, he made mistakes, but he finished the job. That first act of intentional discomfort didn't just give him experience; it gave him confidence. It rewired his brain to see a challenge as a solvable problem, not a reason to stop. He's since completed over a dozen installations, learning and growing with every single one. He turned a stressful situation into a development method.
So, how do you do this? How do you turn discomfort into your superpower? It starts with small, deliberate actions. Don't wait for a huge opportunity to show up. Start today.
Flinch & Go: The next time you feel that stomach-churning "flinch" when an opportunity comes up: whether it’s pitching a client, speaking at an event, or asking for help; see that as your cue to lean in, not back out. Do it, even if you’re terrified. The act of doing it proves to your brain that you are capable.
Practice Productive Discomfort: This week, choose one thing you’ve been putting off because it feels hard. It could be learning a new skill on YouTube, writing that blog post, or cold-calling a potential mentor. Dedicate 20 minutes to it every day. You will feel uncomfortable. That's the point. That's the muscle growing.
Journal Your Wins: After you intentionally step out of your comfort zone, write down what happened. Don't just note the outcome; describe how you felt before, during, and after. This exercise is crucial because it helps you build a mental library of positive experiences with discomfort, proving to yourself that the reward is always worth the risk.
My mission is to help you move from potential to power. The potential is already inside you; the power comes from a willingness to feel a little uncomfortable. It’s what separates those who talk about change from those who make it happen. Now, go make it happen.
